Bob Dylan: The Early Years: A Retrospective
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (October, 1990)
Authors: Craig McGregor and Nat Hentoff
Average review score:

Portrait of a legend when he was earning the title
This book compiles much of the best writing done about Bob Dylan in the '60's, when he was in the midst of what is perhaps the greatest burst of creativity by a musical artist in this century. Includes interviews from the Village Voice and Playboy, and lengthy, perceptive essays on an artist whose music holds up to infinite levels of analysis. The rather dated quality of these essays and interviews is what gives them their beauty. These articles were written when all of this was new and no one knew where he was going or where he would take us. Dylan was not the grizzled bluesman he is today, but an absolute force of nature in his mid twenties; a kid from Minnesota who became the axis of popular culture. It is generally acknowledged that the directions that rock took in the '60's sprang directly from him. And he often changed directions every few months. For example, John Wesley Harding, released at the height of the psychedelic era, was a quiet, acoustic album, which in turn led the Beatles toward a similar sound for the White Album

Dylan fans never forget
I'll be sorry to see this book eclipsed by Ellison's _Collected Interviews_, even if I do have Ellison in my amazon shopping cart already. The appearance of this book was a godsend, back in the days when we were all kicking ourselves for having failed to ferret away multiple copies of the issue of _Playboy_ which had featured THAT interview. It took an Australian journalist to get one of the pioneering volumes of responsible Dylan scholarship into print, and God bless'im, says this guy...

Citadel to City-State: The Transformation of Greece, 1200-700 BCE
Published in Hardcover by Indiana University Press (01 June, 1999)
Authors: Carol G. Thomas, Craig Conant, Craig Conant, and Carol G. Thomas
Average review score:

Citadel to City-State
Definitely not light reading for anyone but those with a fair background in Greek history and archaeology. The book is, however, quite thorough and uses an interesting approach to the subjects of political and social development in the early Greek world, focusing on the archaeology of specific type sites. Since much of what emerged during this critical period in European history has an impact still felt, however unconsciously, on modern society, the book is an important one. It might even be useful as part of a syllabus for selected courses in political science.

the greek dark ages
There always seems to be a gap between the very ancient Greece of the Iliad and the ancient Greece of Athens. This book sheds light on this period of transition from the days of the citadel society familiar from accounts of the Trojan War to the more familiar days of the classics. Since the Greek Dark Ages were illiterate, this book is organized around a series of archaeological sites and discusses their social structure, physical artifacts and historical context. This book does an excellent job of presenting the transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age and from the fortress kingdoms to the city states.Towards the end, it offers a glimpse of the origins of the city state oligarchies that figured so prominently in the origins of our own civilization.

A very good buy
There is plenty of information in this book for all baseball fans. It has sections on Service, Batting, Baserunning, Pitching, Fielding, Miscellaneous....in just the Regular Season section alone. Additional sections are Division Series, Championship Series, World Series, All Star Game. The book has lifetime records of the top significant events, ie, GP, BA, 20yr player and pitcher, >.300, .>300 10 times or more, SLG, AB, R, H, Dbl, Trpl, HR, PHR, Grand Slams, and on and on..... It also has team information, club records and individual records per team, back to the year, naught. There is a LOT of information in this book. I have carried this book with me everywhere for the past 2 weeks, and everybody I know who likes baseball has sat for at lease 20 minutes with the book. It is 566 pages and well worth the money.

This book is very addictive
I've bought copies of this book since SN starting putting it out a few years ago. It is a treasure trove of arcane facts that only a true baseball lover could enjoy. Where else can you find out who has stolen the most bases in a game for the Arizona D-Backs or who looks good on the Red Sox this year. If you like baseball you will love this book.

Cucumber Soup
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (October, 1998)
Authors: Vickie Leigh Krudwig and Craig McFarland Brown
Average review score:

Teaching teamwork through Cucumber Soup!
I think that this is a very innovative book. The illustrations are gorgeous and the integration of math is great! I think that this book could be used to student's benefit when introducing class rules and presenting the idea of teamwork in a classroom. It is good for younger children because of the repetition.

Cucumber Catastrophe
I thought this book was delightful! The counting reinforcement is excellent for children and including facts on the insects involved is a neat idea. It does not take away from the story because they are off to the side and you do not need to read them each time through. This story teaches a great lesson that even those small in size, can complete mighty tasks. Wonderful idea to include a recipe. What child isn't going to ask what cucumber soup is and how to make it! This book has nice illustrations!

What are the chances...?
How many times have you been asked, "What are the chances...?" Or how about, "What percentage of...?" Or, "Is this really indicated?" If you want to know the most common predictive outcomes, current therapies, and management algorithms, then this book will be a help to you. It is very easy to read and includes many algorithm flowcharts. It not only aids management, but also can help with prediciting prognosis outcome (although perhaps to a lesser degree). Not many references, though.

Boards Buster
Fantastic Book!! Could not have passed my boards without it!!

Custody of the State (Chambers of Justice)
Published in Paperback by Harvest House Publishers, Inc. (March, 2003)
Author: Craig Parshall
Average review score:

Another Adventure with Will Chambers
Custody of the State is another interesting story that will keep readers pondering lifes big questions. Why do bad things happen to seemingly innocent people? Why does God allow corruption and deceit and how can people of faith trust God in troubled times?

Will Chambers, the main character in this story, once again offers the reader a picture of perfectly flawed humanity. It is hard to not love this character - and yet at the same time wonder how he doesn't suffer from some mental disorder! The guy is amazing...his ability to endure suffering, his innocence in certain situations and wisdom like a child in others.

The story itself is captivating and hearttugging at the same time. However, in my opinion Mr. Parshall's first book The Resurrection File was a tiny bit better. Custody falls just a little short of what I believe Parshall can produce. In Parshall's first book the characters were more solid whereas in Custody a few of the "supporting cast" didn't really have the punch that the first book carried. A few of the storylines in Custody were also not really needed and I think added a little more clutter to the story then needed to be. So because of this I'm rating this book - of the 3 other Parshall books I've read previously a 4.

However, even with a rating of 4 I still highly recommend this book because the court room scenes and airplane ride storyline is worth it!

Great read!
Struggling new Christian Will Chambers finds his faith tested in this second installment of the series. The state is after a young mother for allegedly poisoning her child. Fearing that she will lose the child and that the boy will die as the result of an undiagnosed condition, she flees, leaving her husband to face the consequences. Will reluctantly takes her case, having to fight all the way to save this family, and a baby's life. Not only is he spiritually challenged, but faces beatings and prison to do what is right.

Will's personal life is also in a muddle. His new love, Fiona's, career separates them often, and though he wants to marry her, the timing is just never right. Along for the ride are the other characters you met and loved in the last book; Jacki, his secretary, and even Tiny.

***** Christians who want a legal thriller on the order of Turrow or Grisham, but without sordid details, will find their answer here. Will Chambers is an excellent hero, one easily identified with as he struggles along in his journey. He is flawed and questioning, much like most readers, and will be someone with whom even non Christians can find a common chord. In fact, seeing his struggle to faith might win a few converts.

DAMN REBEL BITCHES
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (September, 2000)
Author: Maggie Craig
Average review score:

Don't Mess with the Ladies...
This is a good book for the ladies of all of those kilt-wearing men who portray Jacobite soldiers in the '45 Rising. Extensive research is evident throughout. Women played a huge role in the Rising, from recruiting soldiers to gathering intelligence. This book explores the activities of some of the most fervent, yet overlooked, Jacobites: the women.

Good resource for adding depth to reenactment personae.

Wonderful edition to Scottish Women's History
I found this book to be one of the great finds in recent years. Scottish women, be they common or noble, have always had a unique place in Scottish History. Unfortunately their story is often missing from the pages of Scottish history annals. Ms Criag has provided readers with a unique glimpse into the romantic period of the second Jacobite uprising from the women's point of view. The women were remarkably loyal to a man and cause doomed from the start. This is a must read if you want an historical approach that is scholarly in its content but entertaining in its delivery. This one should be in all Scottish historians' keeper shelves.

Defending the Reagan Legacy
Published in Paperback by John m Ashbrook Center for Public (01 January, 1993)
Author: Mickey G. Craig
Average review score:

An Effective Defense
In this booklet Dr. Craig does a good job of defending Ronald Reagan's Presidency. The most important part of this booklet is where it demonstrates that the Reagan tax cuts did not create the deficits of the 1980's. Craig shows that revenue to the federal government increased dramatically during the 1980's. This booklet shows that the reason for increased federal debt during the 80's was because of dramatic increases in spending brought on by the Congress. And it is shown that Reagan's ability to control Congressional spending was limited by the Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974.

Dr. Craig also makes the point that Gorbachev and the Soviets apparently did believe that the Strategic Defense Initiative which Reagan promoted would work. Because the Soviets would not have strongly opposed S.D.I. if they thought it would fail.

Shows the Facts of the 1980's Under Reagan
Mickey Craig's essay is short, but very effective. He cuts through all the misconceptions about the Reagan years and proves that they were a success. Craig begins by talking about Reagan's successes in foreign matters and how he helped change the world for the better. He played a key role in the demise of Soviet Communism, and also helped other nations with their fight for freedom and independence from Communism. Craig then went on to defend Reaganomics. To the dismay of many opponents, it really was a success. Many say the 1980's was about greed, but with the cut of marginal taxes by Reagan, that allowed more opportunity for charitable contributions, which increased. Our economy also experienced "seven fat years" that gave America the greatest economy until now. Overall, Reganomics started the economic recovery that needed to happen after the 1970's, and its policies continue to today. Craig also was correct when he said the deficits and debt were not all Reagan's fault. It was the fault of an ever-growing federal government and Congress that spend irresponsibly. Finally, Craig went on to talk about Reagan's success in social matters. He proved Reagan was not aloof or ignorant or even uncaring about social issues. He tried to appoint judges that would make sound decisions for America, but these people were shunned and ridiculed by the left-wing of America. We may not have the social problems we do today had Reagan's choices had a chance to make an impact on America.

The only complaint I have with Craig's essay is that he did not focus enough on Reagan's leadership skills. This aspect may have been his greatest asset. He gave America purpose and showed we can overcome any obstacle because the American spirit is stronger than any material object. If you want the facts and not rumors or left-wing truth-bending, Mickey Craig's essay gives you what you need. It proves the 1980's in America were a success, and so was Ronald Reagan.
